The flat surface allows you to turn the meat 4 times for perfect grilling. Don't make the mistake of buying round skewers as you won't be able to turn the meat properly. The flat shape works perfectly to allow turning the food without spinning, especially for softer foods like tomatoes. Simple, elegant design. I like it!
