Amazon.com Review

Versatile and convenient, this 6-quart pot can be used on the stovetop for cooking soup or stew, go into the oven for roasting a chicken or baking a casserole, and placed on its 210-watt heating base for slow-cooking a pot roast or keeping food warm while serving. For serving, the heating base's temperature control has a keep-warm setting. Medium and high settings permit cooking on the base. The oval aluminum pot, colored black like its heating base for contemporary style, has a nonstick interior and measures 12 inches long by 8-1/2 inches wide, ample for a chicken, ham, or roast beef. A lift-out rack is included for keeping food off the bottom so it can be thoroughly browned during roasting. The pot's glass lid permits cooking to be monitored without releasing heat, and the lid's knob stays cool on the stovetop. For easy cleanup, the pot, lid, and rack are dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Slo-Cooker I've ever owned., June 5, 2003
Richard S. (Long Island, New York USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: West Bend 84716 Versatility 6-Quart Oval Slo-Cooker (Kitchen)
What I love about this product:

- Cooking times are accurate. If a recipe specifies 8 hours to cook a pot roast, that's how long it will take. I've never owned a slo-cooker that came close to this degree of accuracy, and I've owned many over the years!

- Ridiculously easy to clean (non-stick).

- The removeable cooking pot is very light-weight, and can be used in the oven, on the stove, or in the refrigerator, hence the term "versatility".

- 6 quart capacity and oval design accomodates most recipes and cuts of meat...it is ideal for me.

- I've cooked 15-20 meals of all types with this cooker and have NEVER had a problem with the results.

Why I could not give this product 5 stars:

- It does not have an on/off indicator (light), nor does it have an "off" setting - once you plug it in, it goes into a "warm" mode, even though the heat switch is turned all the way to the left.

- Speaking of switches, the one on this model appears (to me) to be a bit flimsy with no positive... Read more

This is a much better product than a Rival crock pot. For one thing, it will do so much more ("Versatility" is a good name for it). You can, for example, brown your pot roast in it on your stove before setting the pot on its heating base to slow cook. Hence, fewer pans to clean up. I consider the variety of settings a plus. More choices means more control. Also, the "keep warm" settings come in really handy. I haven't used the heating base as a griddle but it's nice to know I have that option. The only thing I don't like about it is the chord length- it's a bit on the short side. Other than that I love it! Everything comes out tasty. It's easy and convenient to use. It's easy and convenient to clean. It's even light weight!

Oh, well, in all fairness I guess I should mention some things the Rival is equiped to do that the West Bend is not: 1) the Rival pot can break if you drop it or subject it to sudden significant temperature change. 2) The... Read more

I bought this slow cooker for two reasons. First, it was nonstick, which is a BIG plus in my house. Second, I liked the idea that it wasn't a heavy crock.

Well, I have been so happy with my decision! I have used this slow cooker more times over the last month and a half than I ever used the three or four crockpots that went before it.

Yes, as someone pointed out, it does seem flimsy when you first look at it. The key word here is 'seem'. You're so used to a crockpot being a big, heavy crock that this thinner nonstick version seems less substantial in comparison. But it's not. I have no fear of it bending or giving. It's as tough as a crock, if not tougher, but loads lighter and therefore easier to handle.

And, yes, as someone also pointed out, the cover can slip, but only when you're putting it on -- it's not like it spontaneously decides to slip off while cooking. The reason the cover needs precision when it's put on is, I think, due to the... Read more

Product Description

Seasoned, ready to use. Fried chicken is not the real thing unless it's cooked in cast iron. Cast iron gets hotter, stays hotter, and you can't beat it for the crispiest of crisp and the goldenest of golden fried favorites. This 3 qt chicken fryer is deeper than standard skillets. 10 1/4" diameter, 3" deep

Amazon.com Review

Relive the vivid pleasure of childhood camping meals with this 3-quart cast-iron fryer with domed lid. Cast iron creates superior heat retention, heats evenly, and loves a campfire, unlike flimsier pans. Perfect for frying chicken, roasting potatoes, or baking cornbread, this 10-1/4-inch pan features tips on the underside of the lid that allow condensing liquids to drip and moisten the contents. While the skillet comes preseasoned to prevent food from sticking, it works best when sprayed or lightly coated with vegetable oil before use. Whether used in a kitchen or camp, this virtually indestructible pan should last for generations. --Ann Bieri

I own three pieces of cast iron cookware, and this item is one of them... and among my favorite cooking implements, period. For dishes requiring steady, even heat and for cooks who require durable cookware with easy clean-up, cast iron CANNOT be beat!

This fryer is going to last forever. Its care is easy: I scrub it with hot water only, and dry it with an old rag and apply a thin layer of vegetable oil while the iron is still hot... a year and a half later, it's still rust-free and delivering the reliable service I have come to expect and admire. No scratches interfere with its performance, as is the case with my allegedly-long-lasting Wearever nonstick cookware set (what a waste of money THAT was!). In fact, in this particular chicken fryer, I've produced everything from french fries to spaghetti sauce to eggs and bacon to french toast! It's a dependable griddle, skillet, grill, and pot, and it goes right from the stovetop and into the oven for maximum versatility.

The best... Read more

I bought this one because I was looking for something to fry various things in without the pot warping (as stainless steel pots do). Since I got this pot, I have been using it to cook all sorts of dishes--soup, stew, reheating rice etc. It's big enough to hold enough fried rice, for example, for 4, and I can pop the entire pot, lid and all, into the oven to keep warm. But it's not so big as to be too heavy to handle.

The best part about this pot is how nicely the lid fits. I was surprised how tight the lid seals the pot. The steam starts to escape only when the liquid in the pot is boiling really hard. The interior of the lid is unusual looking. It is not flat nor smooth. It has a dozen small protruding tips shaped like candy cones. When steam condenses on the inside of the lid, the resulting liquid falls along those tips back into the pot, instead of dripping off the edge of the lid. Ingeneous, I thought.

I find this a very versatile and useful pot. Extremely... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Real measurements of the pan, October 17, 2004
Anonymous (Brooklyn NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lodge Logic 3-Quart Covered Chicken Fryer, Black (Kitchen)
Well, no complaints exactly -- it's what I ordered and wanted -- but be aware of the exact dimensions of the pan. Though measured across the top the diameter of the pan is accurately 10 1/4 in., the sides slope in making the cooking surface a measly 8 in. -- kinda small of you're thinking of frying in larger batches.

I was also hoping to double this deep fryer as a frying pan (I saw the higher sides as a bonus, lessening grease splatter), but again the small 8 in. cooking surface limits what I can make ie. too small for bacon. Apparently, Lodge makes a larger fryer -- a 5qt 12" sucker -- that might be a better choice for a family, but alas, not available (currently) on Amazon.

Otherwise, a great pan, substantial and well made. The lid is a great bonus to have.

I have long been skeptical of "deep frying" at home. The smell, the mess, the smell...Anyway, I recently decided to throw a fish fry and decided it was time to invest in a fryer. The biggest issue for me in purchasing a fryer was the sturdiness of the burner stand. Besides having the ability to heat 12 quarts of oil, I also wanted a burner stand that would hold the weight of 20 quarts of beer for my homebrewing. I decided on the Bayou Classic.

This Bayou Classic kit came with everything and setup was simple. The burner stand exceeded my expectations for sturdiness and the height was such that when using the 10 quart stock pot, you could place the burner stand on a safe sturdy work surface to elevate it off the ground. I plan on also using this burner with my wok. The burner was able to bring the oil to temperature in approximately 15 minutes. The Fish and Chips turned out great.

Of course when using 350 degree boiling oil, you do not want your weekend fry... Read more

This review is from: Bayou Classic 3016 30-Quart Outdoor Turkey Fryer with Basket and Fry Pot (Lawn & Patio)
When I first heard about frying turkeys, I just new I'd try it eventually and this fryer has everything I needed (minus the turkey, oil & fuel) to get started. My cooker arrived right on time in perfect condition and went together without a hitch.

I fried up some chickens so I'd have some frying practice before T-day rolled around and learned a few tips:
The meat should be at nearly room temp before cooking. I took my bird out of the fridge the night before and put it in a cooler with no ice so it was cool but not cold. Also, the oil temp. should be right at the red-line before putting the meat in. If your bird is still cold from the fridge or if the oil is not hot enough, the oil temp will plunge to below 300 and it will take most of the listed cook time to get back to 350. Then you'll be guessing at to whether your meat is done.

When I put the Thanksgiving turkey in, I hung the neck around one of the legs and after about ten minutes, I fished it out... Read more

Yes the pot held the oil and turkey and the fire lit under the pot. It didn't fall down under it's own weight and fried my turkey. That said here are some problems. I had to make 3 trips to the hardware store so if you purchase this item and read this first, you should knock that down to ONE trip. But you will make the trip none-the-less. First off the three scews that hold the legs on are listed at 2" but are more like 1 1/4" and thus had to be replaced ( or you WON'T get the nut on the screw ). Second, and this is crucial, the main bolt that goes through the burner assembly, burner holding bar, and heat shield is made of "Made in China" crap metal. It will already be installed and is sticking out of the burner assembly. In the instructions you have to remove it's nut and washers. But when reapplying the nut and washers through the bar and heat shield, it WILL strip unless you get lucky and tighten it just right the first time. This bolt needs to be made of good steel... and it's... Read more
